Best Garmin Golf Watch To Improve Your Game

Garmin Approach S20 is the best Garmin golf watch because it measures accurate distances, tracks hits and putts, monitors your activities, has long battery life that lasts up to 15 hours when used on GPS mode, and has a big text size.

A Garmin golf watch will help beginners, intermediate, and advanced golfers know the distance to the green, and what is ahead on the hole you are going to play. The golf watch can be worn by young, and young at heart golfers (seniors). Moreover, the text in the watch is readable even for seniors.

It is always an advantage to know beforehand the layout of the golf course you are about to play so you can be prepared mentally on what clubs you will use more often. If a golf course has many trees, you might use more irons than woods to be more precise and to have your ball land on the fairway. UNIQUE FEATURES

Why is Approach S20 my first choice? It is because S20 has 2 unique features that the other 4 Garmin golf watches do not have.

1. Biggest Text Size
Based from customers’ feedback who were in their senior years, that is around 60 to 70 years old, they were able to easily read the display on Garmin S20 watch, both the numbers and graphics, even though these seniors need to use reading glasses when reading newspapers.

Seniors can easily view the distances to the green – front, middle, and back part of the green. The size of S20 watch display is 0.9” x 0.9” (23 x 23 mm) diameter. The other top 3 Garmin models have a display size of 1.0″ (2.54 cm) diameter.

When Garmin S20 is compared to the other top 4 models, its display numbers are a bit bigger.

2. Longest Battery Hours
From an Approach S20 lithium-ion battery that is fully charged, you may use the Garmin S20 watch from two to three 18 holes of golf without charging the watch battery. In GPS mode, the watch can be consumed in about fifteen (15) hours, compared to about ten (10) hours maximum usage in other Garmin Top four models.

Though Garmin S20’s price is a bit high, in the long run it is worth it because it will save you much time spent on the battery charging.

MAIN FEATURES

1. AutoShot Recording
Believe it or not, the Garmin S20 can auto track and auto measure your golf shots’ distance in the fairway! This watch will memorize where you made your golf shots, so you can wisely analyze in what area of your game you can improve. You must upload your golf data to Garmin Connect™ to view all these measurements.

2. Green View and Pin Repositioning
You can now see the top view of the green even before you reach it! Appreciate the creative design of the green you are playing – its curves and shape. And be able to change the position of the pin in your watch to the real location of the pin by using your finger or pen, so the distance you get from the Garmin watch will be efficient.

3. Tracking of Score
You may record in S20 the number of strokes per hole from your drive (first shot), fairway shots, up to the green (number of putts). After a round of golf, you can easily how many putts you made, how long you hit the ball in that day.

When you have used S20 for many golf games, you can see statistics based from the club you used. For example, you can know the average distance of your fairway five wood from the ten games you played.

4. Auto Update Golf Course
Garmin S20 does the updating of the usual golf courses you are playing automatically! And the course update is free!

5. Works with TruSwing
You may use Garmin TruSwing™ swing sensor clipped in your club, together with Approach S20 to see computerized images of your golf swing. Helping you improve consistency in your swing.

OTHER FEATURES

1. Monitor Walk and Sleep
The Approach S20 can track how many steps you walked in the golf course. This walk data is helpful to people who are concerned on the calories they had burned in the day.

Also, the S20 can monitor how long you slept. Easily compute and add if you made about eight hours of sleep every day for a more healthy body.

2. Phone Message Alert
Even if your mobile phone is inside your golf bag, you can now read the important text message from your watch! The Garmin S20 can be connected via Bluetooth® to your mobile phone which might be kept in your golf bag. Please double check If your mobile phone is compatible to Garmin golf watch.

Not just text message, you can also view emails in your watch while you are playing golf. This feature will also notify you when there is an incoming call from your mobile phone!

But if you feel distracted from the above alerts, you may turn this feature off.

3. Watch Colors
The Approach S20 has the following watch colors in Regular size:
a) white – mainly white watch, having a white strap.
b) black – a completely black watch, having a black strap.
c) slate – mainly slate watch, with slate colored strap. Slate color is like color gray.
d) midnight teal – midnight teal watch, with midnight teal colored strap. Midnight teal color is like color blue-green.

All of the above watch colors are in regular size only. Meaning the watch is suitable for wrist with circumference of approximately 5.4 inches to 7.6 inches.

4. Weight of Watch
The weight of Garmin S20 with the battery attached is 1.5 oz (42.2 g). It is considered lightweight for an average golfer.

5. Water Resistant
The Approach S20 can be worn even under water. The maximum water depth is 5 ATM (50 meters deep), but do not place it to the maximum level. To be on the safe side, just use the water in swimming pool, and not for deep diving.

6. Not Touchscreen
To select if you want to turn on or off a feature, you will need to press the side buttons. The S20 is not touchscreen capable, so you need to choose which among the four buttons to press.

7. Highly Recommended for Seniors
I highly recommend Approach S20 for seniors (but young at heart), because of its bigger display compared to the other Top 4 models. The senior can just simply look at the watch, and the numbers are easy to read.

Since the battery can last up to three rounds of golf, then it results to lesser time to charge the watch. For seniors, the lesser requirement of a watch, the better. If the senior will not use the other high tech features of the watch, it is alright. What’s important is the accuracy of measurements that Garmin will provide from the ball to the green.

If you are a senior golfer, then you can learn a lot of techie stuff from Garmin S20. You can also view numerous helpful data through Garmin Connect while you enjoy playing.

Garmin S20 has some more features that are common to the other 5 Garmin golf watches. You can read all about them here.

AVAILABLE COLORS & PRICES OF GARMIN S2

The Garmin S2 model is my second choice because it has almost all the essential and important features of a Garmin golf watch. It has less of the high technology features that is why the price of S2 is lower when compared to the other top Garmin watches that I recommend.

Approach S2 is a simple yet powerful watch that is suitable to “simple” golfers who mainly need to know the distance of the ball to the green, and how far the doglegs and hazards are in front.

MAIN FEATURES

1. Easy to See Display
The display size of S2 watch is 1.0″ (2.54 cm) diameter, making the numbers and graphics readable. This is made possible by its high resolution graphics, that produces clear lines. And even if the sun’s rays are so bright whether it is morning sun, or afternoon sun you can easily read the distance to the green from the watch because of the special glass material Garmin used.

2. Colorful Watch Straps in Regular size
The Approach S2 watch and strap colors I recommend for male golfers are:

a) black/red – black watch with some red combination, having a black strap.
b) black/green – black watch with some green color, having a black strap.
c) blue/black – mainly blue watch with some black color, having a blue strap.
d) white/gray – mainly white watch with some gray color, having a white strap (suitable for lady golfers also).

The Approach S2 watch and strap colors I recommend for lady golfers are:

a) purple/white – white watch with some purple color, having purple colored strap.
b) white/gray – mainly white watch with some gray color, having a white strap.

All S2 watch colors are in regular size only. Garmin golf watch’s Regular size is suitable for wrist with circumference of about 5.4 inches to 7.6 inches.

3. Distance to the Green
No more wrong estimates about your ball’s distance to center of the green, because Now you can have an Accurate Measure through the S2 watch. Garmin S2 is made with quality GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver technology, so just by looking at your watch, you will see your golf ball’s distance to the green. Not just any part of the green, specifically distance given are front part of the green, middle, and back part of the green.

The S2 watch actually connects to numerous satellites outside the earth, and in return the Approach S2 receives the date, time, and location informations.

The GPS mode works even in rainy season, or not so good weather condition.

Thanks to Garmin’s efficient method of receiving data, the golfer gets a precise measurement to the green. By knowing the right distance, you can then choose the right golf club, and more chances of your ball getting closer to the pin!

Distance measurement can be in yards or meters. If you want to change to unit of measurement, just go to “Set Up” menu, and choose “Units” option.

4. Hazards, Doglegs and Layups Ahead
You can see from the Garmin S2 watch the layout of hazards in the hole you are playing. Example of hazards are sand bunkers, and water way (including lake and river). You may view from the watch the distance from where you are standing to the hazard, this will surely help you use the right iron or club. You may opt for a safety layup shot just before the water way, or charge it over the water!

Usually in par 4 and par 5 holes, there are doglegs, meaning the fairway has a to the left or right. And you cannot see the green unless you went pass the dogleg. With S2, the dogleg curve part of the hole is viewable, and you can know how far it is from your stand point.

5. Shot Distance
When you hit an almost perfect shot, you may want to know how far your golf ball went. With S2, through Garmin Connect application, you can know your ball’s distance. You may see the other times you played on the same hole, and see how you have improved!

6. Battery Life

You can use the S2 watch in GPS mode for about eight hours. Actually, this one has the shortest battery hours among the Top five, and it is the S2 watch’s down side. To work around this limitation, I suggest that you use the S2 watch only when playing golf. Turn off the S2 watch after playing golf. In this way, you conserve battery’s energy, and fewer times to recharge the battery.

The following X40 watch colors are suitable for lady golfers:1. white / black band

2. frost blue / midnight blue band
3. limelight / midnight blue band

2. Heart Rate Monitoring
The Approach X40 watch can count your heart rate while you wear it at your wrist! In one minute, how many heart beat did you have? The result is your heart rate.

According to WebMD, there is no standard number of heart rate, it depends from person to person, and in what activity you are in.

Do you have a target heart rate? Now you can easily monitor it while you enjoy your golf game. Watch your heart rate improve as you regularly play golf, and take enough rest.

MAIN FEATURES

1. Green View and Pin Repositioning
You can view the picture of the green from your X40 even when you are still far away. Helping you prepare how you will put the ball to a certain spot of the green’s layout.

If the pin has changed location, you can alter from your X40 the actual pin’s position, so you get a more precise distance from your ball to the pin.

2. Touch Screen
The Approach X40 has a touch screen display technology, meaning you can move the green’s pin with your finger. Now you can easily tell the watch what you want to do.

If you are distracted with the finger prints on the watch display, then you can use a stylus pen.

3. AutoShot Recording
Whether you played a nice game or not so good game, the X40 can record your shots made in every hole! The watch records how far your ball went and its behavior. Through your Garmin Connect account, you can see the top view where your ball landed. And you can double check your golf score from this feature.

4. Works with TruSwing
Garmin TruSwing is another product which helps analyze your swing speed, club path, and more. When TruSwing is connected to Approach X40 and your mobile phone, you can instantly view in 3D your golf swing.

OTHER FEATURES

Uses built-in sensors to track your movement and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle. Tracks steps, sleep, distance and calorie data

1. Monitor Walk, Sleep and Calorie
Aside from heart beat count, the X40 can also count the number of steps you walked, how long you slept, and the number of calories you burned! Get encouraged to walk more, that’s the beauty of the Approach X40.

However, based from other customers’ testimony, Garmin X40 is not perfect in its counting of walk, sleep and calories burned. For me, at least you have some guide on its level. Because the main focus of the X40 watch is its golf features, like distance to the green.

2. Phone Message Alert
Garmin X40 can wirelessly connect to your mobile smart phone or tablet, even if your device is inside your golf bag. As a result, you can receive text messages to your watch, or notification of incoming call, or receive email message!

To be sure on this feature, kindly double check your device’s compatibility to the Garmin watch.

3. Display size
The X40 display length is 1 inch, and its width is 0.42 inch. Or 25.4 in length, by 10.7 mm in width. When compared to other Top 4, the X40 display size is the smallest. That is why, X40 is my last choice for seniors.

4. Weight of Watch
The weight of X40 is 1.1 oz, or 31 grams. It is the most light weight among the Top 5.

5. Battery Usage at GPS mode
In GPS mode, the X40 watch can be used around ten hours. So that is one to two 18 holes of golf. If you wear the X40 golf watch at the office, at home, or outside the golf course, then you will need to charge it sooner.

To save battery, I advise that the golf watch be used only for golf purposes, so that you will still have enough battery when you use it in the golf course.

1. Save Custom Locations

By using this cool feature, you can be more efficient in selecting the club that you are supposed to use given from where your ball is to your target area on the fairway.

2. Touch Screen
The touch screen display is glove friendly, and you can easily tap and push the pin to today’s location. But in case you are bothered by the many fingerprints on the screen, you may use a stylus pen.

3. Tracking of Score
You may now have an electronic scorecard by entering your golf score in the S4 watch!
For every hole, you can enter number of fairway shots, and number of putts on the green. At the end of the day, you will easily track how many putts you made for the eighteen holes you played. And you can even print the electronic scorecards, or send them through the internet to your golf buddies.

The golf scoring systems Stroke Play and Stableford can be computed using the S4. The Stroke Play is the normal way of golf scoring, where every stroke or shot is counted on every hole. And the golfer who have the lowest total stroke wins.

However in Stableford golf score system, the golfer who has the highest points wins.

For example, in a par 4 hole, you made four shots, it may be equal to two points. If you shot five strokes, it may equal to one point. If you shot six or more strokes, it’s equal to zero point. So if you have a bad hole incurring seven strokes and you are still on the fairway, you may just pick up your golf ball and move on to the next hole.

AVAILABLE COLORS & PRICES OF GARMIN S6

Products from Amazon.com

If you are a techie golfer, serious in improving your golf swing, and if the budget is not an issue, then Garmin S6 watch may be suitable for you, because it has the most number of features among the top 5.

UNIQUE FEATURES

Garmin S6 has 3 unique features that the other 4 watches do not have.

1. Golf Swing Statistics
The Approach S6 is high tech because it can calculate your swing’s strength, and tempo of your swing without the need an additional product.

a) Strength of Swing – The S6 watch can compute how fast you make your back swing, and how fast you deliver your down swing.

b) Tempo of Swing – The S6 analyzes the speed of your back swing and down swing. As a result, the S6 gives your swing tempo ratio.

Based from the best golfers’ swing speed, it has been analyzed and agreed that the best ratio of full back swing and down swing speed is 3 to 1. It means that the best down swing speed is 3 times your full back swing speed.

For example, if your full back swing speed is 0.9 second, then your ideal down swing speed is 0.3 second. If you attain the 3 to 1 ratio, you will hear a tone from the S6 watch letting you know that your swing tempo is correct.

So the next time you go to the driving range, remember to wear the S6 watch to keep your swing tempo at the right speed.

2. Colored Display
The Approach S6 is the only watch among the Top 5 who has a fully colored display, compared to the other Top 4 which has black colored text and graphics.

With a colored display you can easily understand the layout of a hole. Topmost of the display is the green or putting area and you can see the hole’s flag. For the putting area to be easily seen, Garmin made it color red.

The water hazard like lake, river, or any body of water is color blue. The sand trap or bunker is color brown. The hole’s fairway is located in the middle of the screen with green and black checkered colors.

3. Direction to the Pin
When you are playing in a golf course that have a lot of hills and slopes, and you are not able to see the pin from your position, the S6 will help you give direction where the pin is. It is very useful especially when your ball goes to the trees or hazards and you cannot see the hole’s flag, the S6 will assist with an arrow pointing the pin’s location.

OTHER FEATURES

1. Watch Colors
The S6 is offering the following watch colors:

a) light – The side part of the main watch is color white, while its top part is black. The outside part of the band is color white, while the inside part is color black.

b) dark – The main watch part is color black. The outside part of the band is color black, while the inside part is color white.

c) orange – The main watch part is color black with some orange lines on its side push buttons. The outside part of the band is color black, while the inside part is color orange.

The S6 watch has one size only which is the regular size, suitable for wrist with circumference of about 5.4 inches to 7.6 inches. There is No extra large sized watch band for S6.

2. Golf Score Method
You can enter the following golf game scoring methods in the S6 watch: Stroke play, Stableford, and handicap scoring.

3. Battery Life
The S6 has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can last for about ten (10) hours in GPS mode. In order to keep you from charging again, I suggest that you use the S6 golf watch when you are about to play golf only. When you are not in golf, just turn off the Approach S6 watch to save battery energy.

Garmin S6 has the most number of features among the top 5 but why is it my last choice?

Based from many customer feedbacks, though there are a lot of the features, many golfers are not able to USE those features. Some are not that techie enough to utilize it. Because the battery has only ten hours of usage time in GPS mode, golfers may experience low battery power while still having plenty of holes to play.

But if you think that you would like to use all or most of the features, and the price is not a problem, then Garmin S6 might be for you. In case you encounter a difficulty in using a feature, feel free to contact Garmin’s support team, and they are happy to help.

There are much more features in the Approach S6, and you can take a look at them here. Also, you can compare their features in a table format here.

F.A.Q.

Here are other important questions and answers about the top 5 Garmin golf watches.

1. Can I enlarge the text size?
The text size of the watch cannot be enlarged. So if you have difficulty in reading small text, then you must choose a watch which displays the biggest text size.

Among the top 5 watches, the model Approach S20 has the biggest text size. Many seniors who need reading glasses when viewing newspapers said that they can easily read the display text and graphics of S20 watch. That is why I recommend this model for seniors and grandparents.

2. What is the size of the watch band or strap?
The regular size of Garmin watch band fits wrist approximately 5.4 inches to 7.6 inches. While the extra large of Garmin watch band fits wrist approximately 7.1 inches to 8.8 inches.

Among the top 5 watches, only the Garmin X40 offers an extra large watch band size.

3. Are fingerprint marks visible on the touch screen?
For golf watches with touch screen feature, you may use a stylus pen or a pointer to accurately point the items on the screen. And it will maintain the cleanliness of the watch display.

I strongly suggest to the golfers who have large fingers to use stylus pen. It will be challenging for people who have large fingers to press an item on the screen using their fingers. It will really test your patience.

By using stylus pen, you can keep the display screen clean and visible at all times. You just need to keep the pen in the pocket most convenient for you. Or by clipping the pen to your shirt if possible.

4. Can I determine the slope of the green by using the watch?
The slope or elevation of the green is not known via the Garmin watch. Only the distance of the ball to the green is available.

5. Can I use it as a stop watch?
There is NO stop watch feature in the golf watches.

Garmin Golf Watch

One major concern I have when playing is being uncertain of the yardage or distance from my ball to the flag. I need to know the distance, so I will know what club I will use. I will sometimes ask a caddie, or my golf companion how far still I am to the green. Thanks to Garmin, because I have a GPS golf watch that will tell me how far I am to the green.

Now I can play alone without worries in the course, because I have a golf watch with GPS as my companion. The golf watch will tell me the bunkers in front which I do not see yet, and how near I am to the water area. Without a caddie to tell me the distance, I do not panic anymore. I even saved some money for a caddie’s assistance.

For me, wearing a golf watch is better than holding a GPS handheld device because a watch is always with you wherever you go. You do not have to worry if the device is misplaced, because it is attached to your wrist all the time.

Aside from the GPS yardage information, you can know the current time via your watch. After your golf day, you can load the data to your computer or mobile phone to review your game easily and analyze which club you are better at, and many more info from the features of the watch.

According to Wikipedia, the word GARMIN came from their founders name GARy and MIN, who started on the year 1989 to develop devices specially with GPS technology.

Apart from using its device at golf, Garmin also developed gadgets for aviation, marine, and other outdoor activities. Currently, Garmin is one of the top brands in golf watches, and many golfers are happy to wear them in their golf game every day. Golf watch became an important device in a golfer’s life.
